Primitive Modernism is a Los Angeles based jewelry design company whose first collection ‘Excavation’ launched August 2014. Designer Susan Joy Brownstein has had several limited edition jewelry collections over the years including, most recently, a hand-carved walnut wood collection called 'Geometry,' which featured delicate geometric shapes draped in gold wire and crystals.
Susan has an impeccable ability to sculpt raw materials, transforming the organic into modern; creating timeless treasures that are sculptural yet elegant. Moved by fine handmade craftsmanship, innovative design and the beauty that ensues from the marriage of the two, each piece that Susan designs is a work of art that has been thoughtfully created with these elements in mind.
Her current collection, 'Excavation', offers earrings, necklaces, bracelets, and rings, that echo times past. Each piece has the earmark of an ancient relic, unearthed in an archaeological dig. The collection gathers inspiration from the ancient tribal cultures of the world, recognizing the beauty in handmade objects which were crafted from natural materials. The colors, patterns, and textures found in their ritual adornments, habitats, textiles, and pottery are a continual influence in the Primitive Modernism debut collection.
